Prominent ear aesthetics is a cosmetic surgery performed under local anesthesia and does not take a long time. Prominent ear does not mean that a person has ears that are bigger than normal. The main goal of this procedure is to eliminate ear abnormalities.

Prominent Ear Treatment (Conventional Technique)

Prominent ear surgery performed with the conventional technique is usually performed under local anesthesia. The procedure takes about an hour. An interactive process is experienced because the patient will not be unconscious during this period. The ear can be reshaped according to the patient’s request by taking his/her opinions during the procedure.

Although the number of patients in this group is very low, some patients request general anesthesia. In other words, the patient may want to be completely unconscious during the procedure. It can be also performed this way. Bandage is applied after the procedure and stays in place for 10 days. Analgesics can be administered postoperatively.

Detailed examination and evaluation should be done before determining the technique to be used in otoplasty. The technique to be used is determined according to the examination findings. Instead of applying the same technique for each patient, using the most appropriate technique for the patient is the most effective way to achieve successful and perfect results.

In general, there are two main techniques in otoplasty. There are individual differences and modifications within the techniques; these are the key issues that are at the heart of the job. Regardless of which technique is applied, otoplasty can be performed under local anesthesia. General anesthesia is required only in preschool children.

The conventional technique is particularly preferred in cases with excessive cartilage. In such cases, conventional technique is applied because cartilage resection is required. After cartilage is weakened, cartilage reshaping is performed using permanent suture materials.  The incision, which is planned to coincide with the back of the ear, is sutured aesthetically using absorbable stitches and the procedure is terminated so that the stitches do not need to be removed. The duration of the operation is around 1 to 1.5 hours.

The thread lifting technique is mainly preferred in patients for whom cartilage removal is not required. This operation, which is performed under local anesthesia as in the conventional technique, takes 15 to 30 minutes on average.  In this technique, the recurrence rate is below 2% and revision can be performed easily.

Before Prominent Ear Srugery

As with any surgery, patients have too many questions and often have fears about otoplasty surgery. I approach my patients in a good-humored and understanding manner, which I think is one of my most important duties towards my patients, and answer their questions and try to eliminate their fears. Of course, I do all this without compromising my realism principle.

Thus, the patient knows what they will experience before, during, immediately after surgery, and in the following days. The comfort of knowing everything about the surgery increases the comfort of the patients and enables them to experience this process in a peaceful manner by getting rid of the question marks in their minds. These are my patients’ own words and I am enjoying witnessing these experiences.

I personally do the first dressing on the second and third postoperative days. Then, I allow the patient to take a bath or shower. After the first dressing, I suggest female patients use the headband continuously for 3 weeks whereas male patients use it only at nights for 3 weeks. I would like to say that flexibility can be shown regarding the use of daytime use of headband for female patients.

The return of the patients to their work varies according to the technique to be used. While patients can return to work immediately after surgery in the use of thread lifting technique, this duration ranges from 1 to 3 days if the conventional technique is used.

Whether the same problem will repeat, i.e. whether recurrence will occur after the surgery is among the most frequently asked questions. Based on my professional experience, I can clearly say that neither of the patients returns to the preoperative state after this surgery. However, the rate of minimal (millimetric) opening in the ear is less than 2% on average. In such cases, the problem can be solved easily with a small revision surgery.

Who are the candidates for Ear Aesthetics?

Ear width reaches more than 90% of adult size in the age of 6 years. Surgery can be performed before school age to prevent psychosocial distress that may be caused by brutal criticism to be made by peers. In such cases, general anesthesia is required.

After this age, surgery can be performed at any age. After 12-13 years of age, the surgery can be performed under local anesthesia, depending on the patient’s preference.

What is Prominent Ear Psychology? ;

Prominent ear deformity basically affects the person negatively in terms of psycho-social aspects in two periods: preschool and adolescence.

The unconscious comments, evaluations, and judgments made by other children in the pre-school period, when the children are most brutal, negatively affect the psycho-social development of the child. Therefore, preschool period is ideal period for otoplasty. A surgery performed during this period both makes the cartilage reshaping procedure easier and eliminates one of the negative factors on the psycho-social development of the child, making it easier to raise an individual with solid character.

I mentioned that adolescence is the second period in which the individual is negatively affected. In this period, the individual who is very fragile psychosocially feels isolated and distant from society especially in terms of socialization.

This condition will negatively affect the psychosocial development of the person as well as his/her school and social life in both periods. I think it is unnecessary to raise individuals with poor psychosocial status because of a problem with a clearly simple solution.
