Ear pinning procedure
- Step 1: First, the patient is examined, and the potential shape of the ear after surgery is shown to the patient. Agreement is reached with the patient.
- Step 2: Local anesthesia is administered to the ear area, and the ear becomes fully numb.
- Step 3: Once numb, an incision is made, and excess skin is removed from the ear.
- Step 4: The “Y” fold of the ear is redesigned, and the ear is given a new shape.
- Step 5: The proximity of the ear to the scalp is adjusted.
- Step 6: Initial stitches are placed, followed by corner stitches.
- Step 7: The new ear is shown to the patient, and if agreed upon, the ear is closed.
- Step 8: Once both ears are completed, a headband is applied.
In otoplasty surgeries, we perform the procedure without weakening or removing cartilage. In techniques where cartilage is removed, the desired ear shape may not be achieved. Therefore, cartilage is not manipulated unless absolutely necessary.
Otoplasty Under Local Anesthesia in Turkey
Dr. Ali Mezdeği performs otoplasty surgeries under local anesthesia. This method is used for 95% of patients. However, if a patient specifically requests general anesthesia, this request is accommodated, and the prominent ear surgery is performed under general anesthesia in a hospital setting. We also use general anesthesia for younger children. Even if the procedure is done in a hospital, the patient does not stay overnight. A few hours after the procedure, the patient can leave the hospital and return to their hotel.
Not every surgeon in Turkey uses local anesthesia for surgeries. However, as a clinic that has operated on thousands of patients, we have determined that the local procedure is easier and more comfortable.
Before the procedure, a local anesthetic is injected to numb the ear, ensuring no pain during the process. The patient remains awake and can converse, feeling no discomfort. The procedure takes about an hour, after which the patient can go home or to their hotel. The injection is painless, and the ear quickly becomes numb. A few hours after the procedure, the numbness fades, and the ear returns to normal without any permanent loss of sensation.
Otoplasty recovery day by day in Turkey
- Day 1: A headband is applied immediately after surgery (worn 24/7 day and night). Painkillers and antibiotics are prescribed by Dr. Ali Mezdeği, and the patient is asked to continue taking them until the medication is finished. We ask that the headband not be removed until the follow-up appointment.
- Day 3: The patient is called to the clinic for a follow-up. The dressing is removed and cleaned. The ears are left free. The headband should only be worn while sleeping for the next two weeks. You can shower, and it’s okay for water to touch the ears. Continue taking the medications.
- Day 7: Swelling and bruising should have disappeared by now. Continue wearing the headband at night.
- Day 10: In some patients, swelling and bruising may take up to the 10th day to subside. There is no need to worry or be concerned. Pain should no longer be felt.
- Day 20: There is no longer a need to wear the headband while sleeping.
- Day 30: The ears begin to look as though no surgery was performed. No traces, swelling, or bruising should be observed. The ears regain their natural appearance, so much so that it won’t be noticeable that surgery was performed. Initially, the ears are closer to the scalp, but by day 30, there is a slight relaxation in the ears.
- Day 90: The final result of the surgery becomes visible. The planned outcome is achieved. The ears move away from the scalp and take on their final appearance. The patient is advised to return for a follow-up.
- Day 180: The surgical scar begins to blend with the skin color, becoming less noticeable. The use of a silicone scar cream is recommended during this period. The scar is less visible in patients with fair skin.
Since the surgical scar is behind the ear, it is not visible or noticeable throughout this process. Only a surgeon carefully examining behind the ear can see the surgical scar.
The patient is frequently advised to shower. To prevent shampoo residue from remaining behind the ear, it is recommended to gently rub with a soft cloth. Care should be taken not to damage the incision line.
Non-surgical otoplasty in Turkey
Non-surgical otoplasty does not mean reshaping the ears without any surgical procedure. Non-surgical otoplasty refers to a minor intervention performed in a clinical setting without the need for general anesthesia or hospitalization, while the patient is fully awake and conscious.
During this procedure, only the ear area is numbed. Similar to dental treatments, no pain is felt in the area during the procedure. In this one-hour procedure, excess skin is removed from the ear, and the ear is reshaped, completing the operation. Although surgical techniques are used, the patient does not undergo surgery. It is a short procedure, similar to a dental treatment.
Incisionless Otoplasty Turkey
Scarless otoplasty does not mean performing ear surgery without any incisions. It refers to performing the otoplasty surgery in a way that leaves no visible scar. In Turkey, Dr. Ali Mezdeği performs non incision otoplasty surgeries.
Since the incision is made behind the ear, it is not visible. In fact, even as the performing surgeon, it becomes difficult for us to see or find the scar a year later. Our patients often worry about scarring from aesthetic surgeries. That’s why we consider this concern and perform otoplasty surgeries without leaving visible scars. Immediately after surgery, the scar is not noticeable, and after a year, it becomes so faint that even we may have trouble finding it.
Otoplasty Revision Turkey
We frequently perform revision otoplasty surgeries in Turkey. Among our patients, the need for a second otoplasty surgery is only 2%. About half of these cases are actually performed according to the patient’s special requests rather than a real need for a second surgery.
In revision otoplasty surgery, if the cartilage tissue is intact, we can correct the ear even if the patient has undergone surgery two or three times before. Otoplasty fail
After a failed otoplasty surgery, you can undergo a second otoplasty procedure. Even if two otoplasty surgeries have failed, a third one can still be performed. The only requirement is that the ear tissue is not completely depleted. Lop Ear Otoplasty Turkey
This term refers to the excessive outward flare of the upper part of the ear. It might not necessarily require otoplasty surgery, as the ear might just be flared out like a sailboat’s sail. It is often performed together with otoplasty surgery. This condition is usually seen in patients with prominent ear issues.
The procedure involves reshaping the cartilage. We perform it without removing or weakening the cartilage. We also pay special attention to creating the “Y” fold within the ear. This is necessary for a natural-looking otoplasty.
One Ear Otoplasty Turkey
This type of surgery is performed on patients who have prominent ear issues in only one ear. The aim is to make the operated ear match the other ear in form. This requires a delicate skill. If we feel that achieving symmetry is not possible, we may proceed with surgery on the second ear as well.
Immediately after the surgery, the operated ear might appear closer to the skull compared to the untreated ear. This is normal. Since the ear is pulled back considering the allowance for expansion, it will take on a natural shape once it slightly relaxes. Achieving this and ensuring symmetry is quite a challenging task. Pediatric otoplasty
Otoplasty surgery in children can be performed starting at the age of 6. This is the age when ear development is almost complete. From this age onward, we can perform ear correction surgery at any age you desire. In fact, we have even performed otoplasty on a 65-year-old patient.
Why should otoplasty be done at age 6?
The age of 6 is the preschool period. It is recommended to resolve prominent ear issues before the child starts school. Children at this age can be quite cruel, and teasing or humiliating a child with prominent ears may occur. To avoid affecting the child’s psychology, we recommend performing ear surgery before starting school.
Types of anesthesia
Depending on the child’s psychological state, if possible, it’s much more practical to perform the surgery with only local anesthesia by numbing the ear. However, if the child has fears and we think it will negatively affect them, we can perform the surgery under general anesthesia, putting the child fully to sleep.
Is otoplasty safe for kids?
Yes, it is safe. Since only the ear is numbed, there will be no side effects or harm to the child. It will not cause hearing problems. Otoplasty has no positive or negative effect on hearing ability. Additionally, in Turkey, the success rate of otoplasty in children is 99%.

Visited Dr Ali Mezdegi at Esteport Klinik in February for ear reduction surgery & the service from the first day up until I left has been amazing. Anna, the Dr’s assistant was very helpful in explaining the ins and outs about the surgery over WhatsApp, along with post op procedures assuring a fast and healthy recovery. The procedure itself lasted 2 hours at max. Pain free once the anaesthesia was administered. Overall, the service was perfect and highly recommend DR Ali and his team for any ear procedures.
As an American nurse, I was a little skeptical to receive healthcare in another country (especially plastic surgery), but while I was residing in Europe I decided to make a quick stop to Istanbul to get an otoplasty I’ve wanted 20 years for. Before making a decision on clinics, I was in close contact with Anna, who works alongside Dr. Ali, to have all my questions and concerns addressed. Never once did I feel like I was being pressured or rushed to make a decision. I can truthfully say that I have no regrets and would refer Dr. Ali and his staff to anyone who is looking to pin their ears back. For people who worried about picking the right surgeon/clinic, I can promise you I’ve researched surgeons all over the world for YEARS and I’ve never seen results as good as Dr. Ali’s.
Something I liked/respected about this clinic was that they were very upfront about their pricing. I was given a flat rate which included the consultation, surgery, local anesthesia, post op appointment, antibiotics, pain medication and extra supplies. In America (and other countries), I found the process to be very complicated and unnecessarily expensive for such a quick procedure.
The entire process was extremely easy. On surgery day you show up to the clinic, sign consent forms and wait for your consultation. During the consultation, Dr. Ali will explain the process and show you what your ears will look like in roughly 3 months. After you agree on everything, you’ll be taken back into the waiting room where you then pay for your surgery. After paying, you’ll go into the surgical suite and lay on your side. The amazing Anna (cannot say enough good things about her), will sit beside you the entire procedure to chat/calm your nerves/translate. After lying on your side Dr. Ali and his assistants will numb your ears and begin the process. I can truthfully say I felt 0/10 pain during the entire procedure. After you’ll be given a mirror to admire your new ears! You’ll be bandaged, receive a headband to keep everything in place for a couple days until your post op appointment and sent home with antibiotics/pain medication.
At your post op appointment, Dr. Ali will take the bandages off, assess the incisions and give you more supplies for your travels.
I’m 2ish weeks post op and so happy with my results and experience. I am still a little sore but it’s nothing a couple ibuprofen can’t handle. Not only did I receive great care from Dr. Ali and his staff, I got to see the beauty Istanbul holds.

I had my Otoplasty surgery with Dr Ali. Where do I start…
First of all the communication with his team & staff particularly Anna was amazing! Honestly she was really kind, informative and professional with everything she did. She accommodated my needs to perfection and I’m very grateful for that.
Once everything was agreed, the steps after that were very easy and smooth.
When I came to the clinic I was greeted by the wonderful Anna and her colleagues. They were very polite and friendly to me and my mother.Then they introduced me to Dr Ali, who was so professional, respectful and informative regarding the whole procedure. He explained everything to me in detail and answered all my questions and concerns.
Then once a few photos were taken by my good Galatasaray friend Burak, I was taken to the procedure room and honestly I have to say I’ve never done a smoother and easier procedure in my life. The anaesthesia kicked in straight away and everything was really easy after that. During the whole procedure Anna, Burak, Dr Ali were all speaking to me and we were having lovely conversations about everything. I was operated on for around 1.5 hours but it felt like 10 minutes. I didn’t feel any pain or discomfort. Even after my procedure no pain was felt.
Then once the procedure was complete, they showed me before and after and I was stunned! Wow… for 26 years I’ve been dreaming of this moment and Dr Ali completed it in around 2 hours.
The look seemed strange at first but after a few weeks the ears will come down and it will look natural. To me it was already perfect but I understood why the procedure is done this way. Dr Ali’s technique is really unique and revolutionary.In conclusion, I want to massively thank Dr Ali, Anna, Burak and everyone at Esteport Klinik for their outstanding healthcare service, kindness, respect and professionalism. I can highly recommend Dr. Ali and team after having Otoplasty surgery done in the spring. Anna is amazing, she walks you through the whole surgery process while being super nice, helpful and patient with any questions. The recovery of my scars was long and arduous so be aware of that possibility. You want to avoid any potential contact with your ears during healing (sports, concerts, etc.). I took a shoulder to one of my ears a few weeks after surgery and that caused a lot of swelling and pain… really set back the healing of my ear and caused temporary asymmetry. For me it took 2-3 months before my ears were well healed and the swelling/pain to be gone. But the results are fantastic and well worth it. Just be prepared for noticeable scars, swelling, and avoid activities that could cause physical contact with your ears during healing.

Reverse otoplasty turkey
In some ear pinning surgeries, can result in “otoplasty overcorrection”. This condition is referred to as “reverse telephone deformity.” However, this deformity can be prevented if proper measures are taken during the procedure. Dr. Ali Mezdeği ensures symmetry by addressing the entire ear, aligning the upper, middle, and lower parts harmoniously.
To avoid this deformity, Dr. Mezdeği uses his proprietary “Mezdeği Anchor Technique” for otoplasty. This method, with a 98% success rate, provides patients with confidence. Otoplasty is a surgery that falls under the field of plastic surgery. Therefore, state institutions, state insurance, and private health insurance do not cover this surgery. In our country, no health insurance from any other country is valid either.
Otoplasty is often done on kids between 4 and 14. At this age, ear cartilage is soft and easy to change. Surgery can prevent teasing about prominent ears. Adults can also get otoplasty.
Otoplasty is mostly safe and doesn’t cause deafness. Rarely, surgeon errors or infections might lead to issues. Some might have short-term hearing loss due to surgery pressure, but it usually goes away. Discuss risks with your surgeon.
It is impossible for the ears to return to their original pre-surgery state after otoplasty. With our developed “Mezdeği Anchor Technique,” the ear stays in the desired position. We have a 2% revision rate. Even so, the ears will not revert to their pre-surgery state. There might be minor imperfections in the shape we desired, but a second surgery can permanently resolve any issues.
If too many incisions have been made on the cartilage, too much tissue has been removed from the cartilage, or if the cartilage has been filed down, it can cause permanent damage and reach a point where it cannot be corrected with surgery. In this case, the only solution is to reconstruct the ear using tissue transfer. It’s a lengthy process and may take several sessions. Therefore, pay attention to whom you choose for your first otoplasty surgery and how experienced the doctor is.
Wearing glasses does not cause ear deformity. Otoplasty is usually required due to genetic reasons. It is not a problem that develops later on. No exercise can solve the issue of prominent ears.
No matter how large the ears are, we can perform otoplasty on any ear in Turkey. For very large ears, we can even combine ear reduction surgery with prominent ear surgery. If your examination findings are suitable, the ear can be fully reshaped. We refer to this as combined otoplasty.

After the surgery, it will be noticeable that you had the procedure done due to wearing a headband for 3 days. However, after this period, anyone who sees you will not notice that you had surgery. The surgery will look unusually natural. Even close colleagues and family members may not realize you had surgery unless you tell them.
The risks you may encounter in otoplasty surgery are both numerically and proportionally low. These include:
- Hematoma (blood accumulation in the surgical area)
- Seroma (serum accumulation in the surgical area)
- Bleeding
- Infection
- Keloid (exaggerated scar healing)
We haven’t encountered hematoma or seroma in many years. Similarly, we haven’t faced any cases of bleeding in many years. After thousands of otoplasty surgeries, we have encountered infection only 2-3 times. Otoplasty is a procedure we perform routinely. It is among the surgeries with minimal risk.
There is a temporary method, though it only lasts for 1-2 hours, to get rid of prominent ears in a practical way. By turning adhesive bandages into double-sided tape and sticking them behind the ear, you can pull the ear back. This can be used for occasions like a wedding, meeting, or special day when you want to tie your hair up. However, it is not a permanent solution.

It is an otoplasty technique performed using a postauricular skin flap. We are familiar with this technique, but we do not use it for several reasons. The Two-Flap Otoplasty technique is applied to cover the stitch marks, where tissues taken from other parts of the body are positioned over the stitches. However, for us, this approach is both a waste of time and makes it harder to intervene if there is an issue. Therefore, we perform otoplasty using the ‘Mezdeği Anchor Technique,’ which we have used on tens of thousands of patients.
You can take a shower 3 days after otoplasty surgery. It doesn’t matter if water touches your ears. In fact, we recommend frequent showers. However, make sure there are no shampoo residues left behind. Gently rub behind your ears with a soft cloth.
