Are you postponing your dream of getting rid of prominent ears simply because you are terrified of the operating table and general anesthesia? The good news is that you do not need to be put to sleep for ear pinning surgery. Otoplasty is a highly localized procedure that focuses entirely on the outer ear cartilage. Therefore, the globally accepted “gold standard” for adult patients is Awake Otoplasty performed under local anesthesia. By using micro-needles to administer a specialized numbing solution exclusively to the ear area, the entire procedure can be completed safely and painlessly while you remain fully conscious.
Thanks to modern medical techniques and the expertise of Op. Dr. Ali Mezdeği at Esteport Clinic, the daunting idea of surgery is replaced with a highly comfortable experience. Because you are not receiving general anesthesia, there is no need to fast for hours before your surgery, and you will not experience any post-operative nausea, grogginess, or the need for an overnight hospital stay. Instead, you can arrive after a normal breakfast, listen to your favorite music, and chat comfortably with your surgeon during the brief 1-hour procedure. Immediately afterward, you can stand up, have a cup of coffee, and walk out of the clinic to enjoy the rest of your day in Istanbul with a lifetime of newfound confidence.

Can Ear Pinning Be Done Under Local Anesthesia?
Yes, absolutely! In fact, for adult patients, local anesthesia is the globally accepted and most recommended “gold standard” for ear pinning surgery. Otoplasty is not a major surgery involving internal organs or deep tissues; it exclusively involves the outer skin and cartilage at the back of the ear. Unlike more complex facial surgeries like a facelift or rhinoplasty, there is no need to put your entire body to sleep. By simply numbing the targeted ear area, you can experience an incredibly safe, practical, and highly successful surgical process.
Will I Be Put to Sleep? (Who Needs General Anesthesia?)
If you are an adult and do not have a severe phobia of medical procedures, you will absolutely not be put to sleep during the surgery. You will remain fully conscious throughout the entire process. You can listen to music with your eyes open and chat with your doctor and nurses. Because your ears will be completely numb, you will feel the physical touch of the procedure but absolutely no pain.
However, at Esteport, we deeply respect every patient’s psychology. If you suffer from severe anxiety or needle phobia and feel that hearing the sounds of the operating room is too much, we can certainly plan your procedure under general anesthesia (a full sleep state) in a fully-equipped hospital for your ultimate comfort. Additionally, for our pediatric patients (ages 6-7), we always perform otoplasty under general anesthesia to prevent them from moving, keeping them safe, and protecting them from any psychological trauma.
How is Local Anesthesia Administered? (Does the Needle Hurt?)
The biggest fear patients have regarding local anesthesia is the idea of “getting a needle in the ear.” However, the process is actually much simpler and less painful than getting a cavity filled at the dentist.
The numbing process is carried out from behind the ear using special, ultra-fine (micro) needles. During the first few seconds when the medication is injected, you will only feel a slight tingling or a tiny pinch, similar to a mosquito bite. The specialized anesthetic solution takes effect in seconds, rendering your ear completely numb. This numbness lasts not only during the surgery but also for the first few hours afterward. This means that when the operation is over, you will not be hit with sudden pain; the anesthesia will wear off gradually and gently.
Will I Hear Sounds During the Surgery? (Psychological Comfort)
Once patients understand that their ears will be numb and pain-free, their next concern is usually, “Will I hear scissors or stitching sounds during the surgery?” Because the ear cartilage is located right next to the ear canal, it is completely normal to hear some mechanical contact sounds during the procedure. However, this is not a frightening or disturbing experience.
At Esteport, we overcome this psychological barrier in a very relaxing way. During the operation, your favorite music will be playing in the clinic to keep you relaxed. Op. Dr. Ali Mezdeği and his surgical team will chat and joke with you throughout the procedure, distracting you from the sounds. If you prefer, you can even put in your own earphones to listen to your favorite podcast or watch a show on your phone! Many of our patients express surprise at how quickly the procedure ends without them even noticing.
What Are the Advantages of Awake Otoplasty?
Choosing to have ear pinning surgery under local anesthesia rather than general anesthesia offers tremendous comfort and practical advantages for international patients:
-
No Fasting Required: With general anesthesia, you must stop eating and drinking hours before the surgery. With local anesthesia, you can arrive at the clinic with a full stomach after enjoying a normal breakfast.
-
No Nausea or Grogginess: The notorious side effects associated with general anesthesia wearing off—such as severe nausea, vomiting, chills, and mental fogginess—are completely avoided.
-
Immediate Discharge: As soon as the procedure is finished, you simply stand up and walk away. You do not need to spend the night in a hospital bed, arrange for a companion, or rest for days in bed. After enjoying a cup of coffee at our clinic, you can step right back into your daily life or return to your hotel to relax.
