Does Eyelid Surgery Leave Scars

Does Eyelid Surgery (Blepharoplasty) Leave Scars?

The clear and simple answer is: No, you will not have visible scars after eyelid surgery.

While every surgical procedure technically involves incisions, the secret to a flawless blepharoplasty lies in where those incisions are placed. In the hands of an expert like Op. Dr. Ali Mezdeği, scar management is a built-in part of the technique. For the upper eyelids, the tiny incision is placed exactly within the natural fold (crease) of your eye, making it completely invisible when your eyes are open.

For the lower eyelids, Dr. Mezdeği’s modern approach focuses on redistributing the fat bags rather than simply cutting away skin. Unless there is severe skin sagging, no external incision is made at all, meaning absolutely zero visible scarring. You get a fully refreshed, youthful look without any telltale signs of surgery.

Upper Eyelid Surgery: The Hidden Crease Technique

For the upper eyelids, the goal is to remove the heavy, hooded skin that makes you look tired. To do this without leaving a visible mark, Dr. Ali Mezdeği uses the "hidden crease" technique.

The delicate incision is planned and made exactly along the natural fold of your upper eyelid. Because it sits right in this anatomical crease, the thin line is 100% hidden whenever your eyes are open. Even when your eyes are closed, this ultra-fine line fades remarkably fast, eventually blending in completely with your natural skin texture.

Lower Eyelid Surgery: The Scarless Approach

The biggest misconception about lower eyelid surgery is that the surgeon must cut away a large piece of skin to fix under-eye bags. Dr. Mezdeği’s modern approach proves this wrong.

Under-eye bags are primarily caused by bulging fat, not excess skin. Instead of cutting the skin on the outside, Dr. Mezdeği typically accesses the fat bags from the inside of the lower eyelid (a method called a transconjunctival blepharoplasty). He then carefully redistributes and smooths this fat to eliminate hollows and puffiness. Because no external cut is made on the skin, there is absolutely zero visible scarring.

What If You Have Severe Lower Eyelid Sagging?

In rare cases where a patient is older and has an extreme amount of loose, hanging skin on the lower eyelid, simply redistributing the fat isn't enough. Only in these specific situations will Dr. Mezdeği make an external incision.

However, you still don't need to worry about scars. This tiny incision is placed exactly one millimeter below your lower eyelashes. Once it heals, the faint line is completely disguised by the shadow of your lashes, making it virtually undetectable to anyone you meet.

How Long Does the Healing Process Take?

Eyelid skin is the thinnest skin on the human body, which is actually a huge advantage. Thin skin heals faster and scars far less than thick skin. During the first week, the incision line will appear slightly pink. By week two, it starts to fade significantly. Within a few months, it becomes barely a whisper.

To ensure flawless healing, Dr. Mezdeği’s team will provide you with specific aftercare instructions, including keeping the area clean, avoiding direct sunlight, and using high-quality SPF once the incisions have closed.

Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know about healing, scar prevention, and traveling to Istanbul for a flawless recovery.

Healing & Scar Prevention
Will people be able to tell I had surgery?

No. Once fully healed, the results look completely natural. Because the upper incisions are hidden in the natural crease and lower incisions are typically made from the inside, there are no obvious surgical marks left behind.

When can I start wearing makeup to cover the redness?

You can safely apply makeup, including concealer and eyeshadow, about 7 to 10 days after the surgery, right after your sutures have been completely removed and the skin has sealed.

Do I need to buy expensive scar creams?

Usually, no. Eyelid skin is the thinnest on the body and heals remarkably well on its own. Dr. Mezdeği will provide a simple post-operative ointment to keep the area moisturized, which is more than enough for a perfect healing process.

What if I have a history of thick scars (keloids)?

Interestingly, the eyelids are one of the very few areas on the human body that almost never develop keloids or hypertrophic (raised) scars, even in patients who are genetically prone to them elsewhere on their body.

Are there stitches that need to be removed?

For the upper eyelid, a very fine, continuous suture is used, which is painlessly removed on day 5 or 6. If the transconjunctival (inside the lid) technique is used for the lower eyelid, self-dissolving stitches are used, so nothing needs to be removed.

Can the sun make my scars permanent?

Direct sun exposure on fresh incisions can cause hyperpigmentation (darkening). It is absolutely crucial to wear large sunglasses outdoors for the first few months and apply SPF once the incisions are fully closed.

Does the scarless lower eyelid technique hurt more?

Not at all. The transconjunctival (inside) approach is entirely painless since it is performed under local anesthesia with sedation. In fact, because no skin is cut, the recovery is often faster and more comfortable.

Traveling to Istanbul Safely
How soon can I fly home after the surgery?

You can safely board a flight immediately after your final check-up and suture removal, which usually takes place on day 5 or 6 of your trip.

Will I look too scary to walk through the airport?

By day 6, the initial redness and swelling will have significantly subsided. Wearing a pair of stylish, oversized sunglasses is more than enough to completely hide any remaining bruising while traveling through the airport.

Do you provide transfers so I don't have to walk outside much?

Yes. Protecting your eyes from the sun and dust is our priority. Your VIP package includes private, tinted-window Mercedes Vito transfers directly from the airport to your hotel, and for all your clinic appointments.

Where will I stay during the healing process?

You will recover in a premium 5-star hotel selected for its cleanliness, comfort, and excellent room service. You can rest comfortably in a clean environment, which is vital for infection prevention and flawless healing.

Can I take a shower at my hotel in Istanbul?

You can take a shower from the neck down on the very first day. However, you must keep your incisions completely dry until Dr. Mezdeği removes your sutures to ensure the delicate skin seals perfectly.
